Delivered From This Present World

Galatians 1:1-5

Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;) And all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia: Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: To whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Exposition

  • Verses 1-2 – Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;) And all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia
    • Paul’s apostleship
      • Not of (from) men
      • Not by men (commissioning, ordaining)
      • Sent from God Himself, Commissioned by Jesus Christ Himself
    • Christ’s divinity
      • Set in contrast with “not of men…”
      • Set equal with God the Father
    • “all the brethren…”
      • Be careful when you are alone in doctrine
      • Athanasius – “then I am against the world” – OK
      • “New” doctrine can be dangerous ground
  • Verse 3 – Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,
    • The grace of God (Gentile salutation)
      • Favor – God’s favor (all the blessings that are applicable to Christians commonly)
      • He prays that they would have grace, even though they were seeking the law
      • Grace must always come before peace
    • The peace of God (Hebrew salutation)
      • This is the opposite of war (those who don’t have God’s peace are at enmity with God)
        • Discord – concord
        • Calamity
        • Destruction – prosperity
        • Danger – safety
      • It is also contrasted with the agitation and conflict of sinners – believers experience peace with God
        • All spiritual blessings
  • Verse 4 – Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
    • The gift of Christ
      • Gave
        • By leaving Heaven
        • By suffering shame on the cross
        • By taking our sin upon Himself
      • Himself – this is enough
        • What could we give? – everything
        • What could we add to His gift?
      • Our sins
        • Because of our sins
        • In the place of our sins
    • Our deliverance
      • Deliver – to pick out and then rescue
        • Not by taking us out of the world
        • But by taking out from under its dominion
      • From this present evil world
        • The gospel is powerful for today
        • The gospel is not just a religious exercise
        • The gospel affects the present evil world, not just the spiritual world
      • World
        • Bad passions
        • False opinions
        • Corrupt desires
        • Selfish ambitions
        • Materialistic pursuits
      • In what ways
        • Positionally
        • Practically, realistically
      • According to the will of God
        • Not by might,
        • Not by the law,
        • But by His will,
        • By the power of the Gospel
  • Verse 5 – To whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
    • Forever and ever starts now
    • DO not wait to praise Him in heaven

Application

  • The plan of redemption
    • We are reminded again of God’s plan for our redemption
    • While our sin was no surprise to Him, to show his grace and love, he gave himself for our sins
  • The Christ of salvation
    • It is important that we keep our focus on Christ
    • Rules and laws, legalism, does not save
    • Neither does it give life, it kills
      • Both unsaved and the saved
      • Reminded of Martin Luther
        • Believe Galatians was his favorite book of Bible
        • Some Baptist would say he was the “worst” thing to happen in world history
        • Because he is a Lutheran, not a Baptist
        • —Gospel, and salvation=Christ alone
          • Not Christ plus works
          • Not Christ plus theology, either
  • The message to the church
    • Have you been delivered from this present evil world?
    • Do you still have bad passions (music, appearance), false opinions, corrupt desires (entertained in mind, fulfilled in body), selfish ambitions (secular, religious), or materialistic pursuits?
    • The Gospel-Christ’s work on the cross-delivers!
    • Trust the Gospel
      • Daily
      • Grow in grace

The plan of redemption
We are reminded again of God’s plan for our redemption. While our sin was no surprise to Him, to show his grace and love, he gave himself for our sins.
The Christ of salvation
It is important that we keep our focus on Christ. Rules and laws, i.e. legalism, do not save. Neither do they give life, they kill both the unsaved and the saved. I am reminded of Martin Luther. I believe Galatians was his favorite book of Bible, and some Baptists would say he was the “worst” thing to happen in world history because he is a Lutheran, not a Baptist. We must remember… the Gospel, and salvation equals Christ alone. Not Christ plus works, and not Christ plus theology, either.
The message to the church
Have you been delivered from this present evil world? Do you still have bad passions (music, appearance), false opinions, corrupt desires (entertained in mind, fulfilled in body), selfish ambitions (secular, religious), or materialistic pursuits? The Gospel-Christ’s work on the cross-delivers! Trust the Gospel. Do it daily and grow in grace.
