A Song or Psalm of Asaph.
Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God. For, lo, thy enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head.
They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones. They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee: the tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes; Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre; Assur also is joined with them: they have helped the children of Lot. Selah.
Do unto them as unto the Midianites; as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison: which perished at Endor: they became as dung for the earth. Make their nobles like Oreb, and like Zeeb: yea, all their princes as Zebah, and as Zalmunna: who said, Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession. O my God, make them like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind. As the fire burns a wood, and as the flame sets the mountains on fire; so persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm. Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek thy name, O LORD. Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish: that men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.
Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
Dominion and fear are with him, he maketh peace in his high places. Is there any number of his armies? and upon whom doth not his light arise? How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight. How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm?
But Job answered and said,
How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest thou the arm that hath no strength? How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom? and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is? To whom hast thou uttered words? and whose spirit came from thee?
Dead things are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof. Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering. He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them. He holdeth back the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it. He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end. The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof. He divideth the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud. By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent. Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?
Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than a house full of sacrifices with strife.
A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causes shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD tries the hearts.
A wicked doer gives heed to false lips; and a liar gives ear to a naughty tongue.
Whoso mocks the poor reproaches his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
Excellent speech becomes not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that has it: whithersoever it turns, it prospers.
He that covers a transgression seeks love; but he that repeats a matter separates very friends.
A reproof enters more into a wise man than a hundred stripes into a fool.
An evil man seeks only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
Whoso rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
The beginning of strife is as when one lets out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.
He that justifies the wicked, and he that condemns the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.
Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he has no heart to it?
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
A man void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes surety in the presence of his friend.
He loves transgression that loves strife: and he that exalts his gate seeks destruction.
He that has a froward heart finds no good: and he that has a perverse tongue falls into mischief.
He that begets a fool does it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool has no joy.
A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.
A wicked man takes a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
Wisdom is before him that has understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.
Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
He that has knowledge spares his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise: and he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
