Leadership – What I’m Reading

“We are not necessarily being unscriptural when our language varies from that of Scripture, but it at least means we might be. This potential problem arises in the home, particularly when mom is critical of how dad is doing his job in teaching and disciplining the children. The phrase ‘spiritual leadership’ is not synonymous with ‘headship,’ although rightly understood the latter certainly entails the former. But when ‘spiritual leadership’ is used as a standalone phrase, it quite often gets filled up with meaning by a discontented wife. ‘My husband is not a spiritual leader’ can mean that a husband is failing in his husbandly duties, scripturally defined, but it can also mean, ‘My husband is not leading in the direction I want him to go.’ In plain English, I want him to lead me and my children so long as he does it my way. So in some cases, the phrase should actually be, ‘I am not a spiritual follower.'” (My Life for Yours, p. 111-112)
