Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it. (Deuteronomy 1:39)
This is an interesting verse and provokes some questions to me. Maybe someday I’ll revive this post with more thoughts and study but, as I consider the age of those that did go in and possess the land, it is interesting that the Bible implies that these 20 year-olds “had no knowledge between good and evil.” Is this metaphorical? Am I reading too much into this? Is it hyperbole? Do 20 year olds not know good and evil? When is someone accountable for their knowledge? Would someone at 20 not know good and evil and at 21, the “light comes on?” Is this relating to economy but not spirituality?
You see,,, I think a lot. Maybe too much!
Very interesting.
I also cannot envision a 19 year old not knowing right and wrong.
Proverbs 20:11 – Even a child is known by his doings, whether his works be pure and whether they be right.
It seems from this verse, children have some knowledge of doing right. Common sense bears that out.
I think the context in Deuteronomy is that these are the children that did not take part in the decision to rebel and not obey God in going into the promised land, not having reached the legal age (20). So therefore they were not responsible for the acts of their parents.
Also, although it does imply it, it does not specifically say that all the children under 20 had no knowledge of good and evil. It says these would go in, but it does not say these ones and these only.
It is similar to Isaiah 7:16.
This isn’t the first time I’ve heard of this. Someone brought this up before and really believes that “kids” are not accountable before the age of twenty. That seems odd to me, though. After working with children of different ages, many do seem to know when they have done something wrong.
Here’s a question I just though of: good/bad good/evil? Is there a difference? I think children know the difference between good and bad, but do they know the difference between good and evil?
I grew up in a bad environment/home life. I didn’t that all that went on was bad until later. When I was little, I though my home life was the norm. In a way, it is within the worldly realm, no the Christian realm…
Anyway, those are just some of my thoughts.
