Competent Humility – What I'm Reading

“Two things are difficult to mix together: competence and humility. This creates a quandary for parents when they consider the education of their children. Competence without humility creates an insufferable arrogance. Humility without competence creates an oozing and unctuous insecurity. Moreover, when parents are successful in teaching their children in this way, the result will often be misunderstanding from the surrounding world. What does confident humility look like exactly? These things should be monitored and measured by parents in the following manner as the children grow: First, do the children have humble confidence before God, primarily in public worship? Second, do the children have humble confidence in the home in relation to their parents and siblings? Third, do they have this humble confidence before their teachers and others who have daily contact with them? If the answer is yes, the rest of the watching world will sort itself out.” (My Life for Yours, p. 128)
