2 Peter 1 – Thoughts From My Devotions

And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: (2 Peter 1:18-19)

Try this thought experiment. (I heard this illustration a few months ago, and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.)

One night, you’re sitting in your living room and the doorbell rings. You answer the door and Jesus Christ Himself is there–not a vision, the Lord Himself. You invite Him in and He sits down and explains His incarnation, sacrificial death, and substitutionary atonement to you. You believe Him and receive Him as your Savior. As He rises to leave, He assures you that you’ll see Him again in heaven someday, shakes your hand and then leaves. It’s the type of experience you’ll never doubt or forget.

We can have more confidence than that! Peter, James, and John touched the Lord with their hands, heard the word of God from heaven, beheld the glory of the Lord, and assured us that the Word of God is more sure than their physical experiences!

My faith is not in myself or my memory of experiences. It is a “bland, simple” faith in the Word of God.
