Smart, but Ignorant


“All of this is a reminder, by the way, that the difference between a person who is liberally educated and one who is not is simply, well, a liberal education. One is not smarter or brighter or more intelligent than the other. …there are plenty of smart people, obviously bright, intelligent people, who are entirely ignorant. God makes people smart; it is the school’s job to cure their ignorance.” (Piety and Philosophy, p. 66)
