Either? Faith or Intellect

“This false either/or—either faith or intellect—is…not an exaggeration contrived to make a point.  It is at the root of every juxtaposition of the two meant to highlight the importance of religion and the relative unimportance of learning.  It is behind every attempt to debunk evolutionary theory in biology or geology that does not attempt to understand what one is debunking.  It is implicit in attempts to persuade Christian young people that the mission field or the pastoral ministry is a more Christian vocation than a career in law or microbiology.  These downplay the importance of trained intellect.  They set one against the other, and always at the expense of education.” (Piety and Philosophy, p. 155)
