Job 42 – Thoughts From My Devotions

And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before. (Job 42:10)

Recently, a guest preacher pointed out that Job did get twice as much as he had before.  Even in children.  Even the marginal notes in my Bible refer to the ten children Job originally had and to the passage in 2 Samuel where David speaks of going to his dead child.  So Job ended up with 20 children.

For many years now I have thought of one aspect of Job’s “recovery” that I’ve never heard mentioned.  He received twice his goods, he had ten more children (three of them, the most beautiful women in the land), but what about Job’s wife?  She is maligned all the time for her words in the beginning of Job, but she must have done something right.  God blessed her with a healed husband, twice as much wealth as before the trial, and the blessing of ten more children (three of them, the most beautiful women in the land — I wonder if they resembled her or Job?).

God gave Job his wife back also!

  1. Great view!!! I recently heard a preacher preach on this and he brought up the point that her love for him was so great that she couldn’t stand to see him in that condition. In a way trying to help him out of his pain. She wanted him to be happy. The pastor was saying the amount of love shown is tremendous although she OBVIOUSLY went about it the wrong way. sometimes we tend to focus on the negative rather than trying to bring out the posotive aspect of a situation….. Thanks

  2. I have been thinking of starting a discussion on Bible passages in my blog and was going to start with Job’s wife. I wanted to ask your permission to repost your post concerning this. Thank you.
