And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. And the devil, taking him up into a high mountain, showed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. (Luke 4:3-12)
I know this isn’t new.
Isn’t wonderful how the Word of God is available for us to answer every need and temptation. Here Jesus is tempted from three different angles and he answers and conquers each with the Word of God. God’s Word is a wonderful resource and comfort.
It must be noted though, that the Word can be twisted. Satan used the Word in his temptation of Christ.
The two thoughts both grip me. The Bible is so wonderful we must go to it and trust it for every need, but we must also take care with it. Not because it is fragile or something, but because, without respect for it and God, we could make it say whatever we want also. This is what Satan did. Just because we’re quoting Scripture doesn’t mean we’re right. We must view the Scriptures higher than we view ourselves–always ready to learn and change from what we learn in Scripture.

Very good point and very well said post.
I’m hopeful for this in my life. The Bible is so rich that I don’t think I’ve arrived with regards to it. And many times I forget things. I have to be reminded.
I don’t recall if I read this thought or heard it, but when Jesus responded to Satan’s temptation He used Scripture out of Deuteronomy. The point was made: how would I fare, if all I had was Deuteronomy?
Thanks for this thoughtful and helpful post. Same with the “Sufficiency of Scripture” post!
