Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD: for men abhorred the offering of the LORD. (1 Samuel 2:17)
This is a summary of the attitude of God’s people during the days of Eli and his sons. It gives me pause to consider the place of responsibility God’s men have in worship. The priests did their service to their own pleasing, and the people recognized that it was wrong. It didn’t take long for the people to neglect the offering altogether because the priests were corrupt.
I’ve seen this in churches today. When God’s men do their work in their own way and for their own promotion, God’s people suffer tremendously. Too many sermons promote preachers and following preachers’ examples, and many Christians recognize this as wrong and have come to abhor church altogether. With the number of good churches around, there is no excuse for this reaction – in Israel’s time there was only one tabernacle. But the reason is there nonetheless. God’s men must recognize the position they hold. They are God’s man. That means they do His business, deliver His message, promote His glory, protect His people, feed His people… it’s not about them and their leadership, it’s about Him.

Good application. I preached 1 Samuel 1 on Mother’s Day and the next Sunday on the Godly mother, Hannah. Hannah’s parenting and her son Samuel offset what was happening in Judges and then in the life of Eli and his sons. A woman who prays for then vows her child to the Lord to a man who wouldn’t restrain his own sons, despite his condition.
