Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee: For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others. Ecclesiastes 7:21-22
It struck me as I thought on these verses how much we concern ourselves with the things other people say. A very wise man said that we should not take heed to all words that are spoken. Listening to gossip is wrong. Listening to gossip about yourself is not right either. Doesn’t matter that it concerns us. “Take no heed unto all words that are spoken.” Too many of us get all worked up over something we heard and we need not do that.
I then thought of the next verse. How often do I say things that are not true. I think they are true. My perception tells me it’s true. But I give a false (evil) report about someone and it’s not true. I’ve cursed them and I didn’t even know it. Our mouths get us into so much trouble. Our “great wisdom” tells us we are right about someone and our “great mouth” spews it out. We ought to pray that the people we talk about follow the instructions of Ecclesiastes 7:21.
Excellent thoughts, Brother Voegtlin. It made me think of:
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. (Luk 6:45)
Thank you for your thoughts from your devotion. It added more meat to the words I have meditated on this week from the Psalter (Psalm 50:29-23). There are even times when I “think” it is excusable to comment about something, but the words are pointless, and I’ll be accountable for those.
We are truly blessed by obedience… “Who off’reth praise me glorifies: I will shew God’s salvation to him that ordereth aright his life and conversation” Psalm 50:23 (versified)
This week I choose to heed the words of a very wise man and not to all words that are spoken.
