Kenya Update – Feb 2

Dear praying friends,

Chaos continues in many parts of Kenya today.  The reports we have received is that another 44 people were killed in the last 24 hours.  I just got off the phone with Masai pastor John Nkome who lives near the town of Kilgoris.  He told me that fighting has begun in his area between the Masai and the Kisii tribes.  While talking with him he could see at least 6 houses being burnt.

Nakuru remained calm again today although tension is growing in some parts.  Flyers and pamphlets are being distributed in areas of town telling certain communities to leave or move because revenge attacks will begin on their behalf in “days”.  I have seen some of this literature myself.

We thank those who have given to help us meet the great humanitarian needs of our people.  Because of this giving we have been able to provide food, water, blankets and other basic necessities.  We have also been able to “rescue” some belongings of people who fled for their lives leaving all behind.  Some of their houses had not yet been identified as belonging to the wrong tribe and we were able to remove their belongings before they were burnt.

A number of the members of Grace Bible Baptist have been evicted over the last few days by their landlords.  We are told that there is an ongoing effort by some in our community to rid their houses of our members because we protect “those other tribes”.  I have tried to intervene on their behalf but it seems that I am disliked by them as much as the church is hated.  Thankfully we have found some reasonable owners who have allowed our people to move to their houses.

Some have not been asked to move but it has been made known to the women that if they are going to keep living in their houses there is certain  sexual “favors” that must be given.  I am steaming right now at one particular man in our community whom I have known for years who is targeting some of our ladies in this way.  I pray I do not meet him anytime soon.

I am attaching two pictures to this email that were taken last Sunday morning.  While in church we could hear the tribal “militia” that was rampaging our community breaking into houses of the Luo tribe taking out their belongings and burning them. If the Luo happened to own the house then the whole house was burned.  Unfortunately the house we were hearing being broken into belonged to one of our members who by this time had fled for their life.  The attached pictures show the smoke that we saw from our church building and then the fire as it was about finished burning their belongings.

Continue to pray for Kenya.  Both sides of this conflict have committed atrocities against the other, neither side is innocent and I fear for Kenya if new leaders do not come.

His for Kenya,

Robert Mickey Jr and family
