Why — a Question or an Argument

In some recent conversations, the response I’ve received to a point I was trying to make at the time has been, “Why?” Now, I have long been a proponent of knowing what and why I believe something. And have always tried to have and be able to give a reason for my statements and beliefs. But this word “why” has got me thinking lately. If the word is a question, then the response will be received and thought about. If the word is an argument, no response will be sufficient.

When you ask why, do you really want an answer or are you hoping to find some hole in the explanation that will give you a reason to disregard the instruction?
