Deuteronomy 23 – Thoughts From My Devotions

Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant which is escaped from his master unto thee: He shall dwell with thee, even among you, in that place which he shall choose in one of thy gates, where it liketh him best: thou shalt not oppress him. (Deuteronomy 23:15-16)

I don’t know what to say about this one except that I don’t understand it. It really gets me thinking. I suppose this is a passage that you really need to know the historical and cultural setting to truly understand what is going on. If not (meaning, what it says at face value, it means), it seems to go against my “Christian” tendencies.  That doesn’t make it wrong, it is the Bible.  It would mean my “Christian” tendencies are not completely lined up with Scripture.  Of course, this is nothing new to human nature.  Religion is often out of sync with the Bible, and that can happen to Independent, Fundamental, Baptists also!

  1. Yes, it seems hard to reconcile the ideas of submission to earthly masters and letting slaves go free if they choose to run away. This is one of those verses I also do not understand, and wonder what I am missing in my thinking on it…
