2 Corinthians 6 – Thoughts From My Devotions

By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, By honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report. (2 Corinthians 6:6-8)

From the context (vss 1, 4), these seem to be ways that we reveal that we have not received God’s grace in vain and prove ourselves to be ministers of God. It seems to me that in a list there would be no overlapping of “ideas,” but here, I need help. What is the difference between the power of God and the word of truth (gospel – Romans 1:16)? Or between the power of God and the Holy Ghost (Acts 1:8)? If there is no difference, why are they all in the list. I’m trying to apply this. I want to be approved as a minister of God — as we all should (vs. 1), and so it seems that I should be able to look for these signs(?) in my life or work toward developing these qualities there.

  1. Good question. God differentiates Himself from His power. For instance, the JWs say that the Holy Spirit is not a Person, but a Force or Power. God’s Person and His Power are separate. Since these are graces manifesting themselves in practice in his life, showing that grace did not enter in vain, Holy Spirit must be the walk of the Spirit like in Galatians 5. The word of truth isn’t a grace, but is likely truthful speech or the message of truth he regularly preaches. When he did walk right and talk right, God’s power was evident in people saved, sanctified, and serving.–>
