Hutchinson, Kansas

From San Diego, I was sent to Hutchinson, Kansas, to receive instructions for the PB4Y2.  Lucille and I decided we would try to be together as long as I would be in the states.  The first time I saw my precious little girl she was 10 months old and walking.  We had an unusual experience here in Hutchinson.  Rentals were almost impossible to be had and even harder for military men.  After renting a primitive room about 4 miles from town, I discovered Lucille was too much of a city gal and could not operate a gasoline stove or use outside plumbing.  One night she walked to town and made other arrangements.  Through the kindness of a Christian brother and sister who were in charge of a Bible Fellowship Church, we were given a room upstairs of the church which had been a former funeral home.  We stayed in a large room which was wallpapered with black and pink flowers.  It was the former casket display room.  But we were so thankful for this place and to become friends with such sweet Christians.  I was there for three months.

My next place of service was Jacksonville, Florida.  I was now training on a PB4Y2.  I was plane captain with this crew.  I think my stay there was about 2 months.  Renting housing there was atrocious and better left unsaid, but the time together was worth it.  From there I was sent back to San Diego.  By this time, the war had ended, and I had enough points for discharge.
